Species Information

Summary:
Features include minute, blackish, shiny cups on cankers on living branches and twigs of true fir, smooth to flaky external surface, and microscopic characters. This is not the same as Godronia abietina (Ellis & Ev.) Seaver or Godronia abietis (Naumov) Seaver.

Grovesiella abieticola was found in OR (Seaver). There are collections from BC at the Pacific Forestry Centre.
Upper surface:
0.05-0.12cm wide, at first closed, spherical or ellipsoid, opening by star-shaped or irregular cleft, then cup-shaped to expanded; shiny-slate to shiny-black
Underside:
external surface grayish black to shiny black; smooth to flaky
Stem:
short stem or almost no stem
Microscopic:
spores 40-67 x 3.5-4.5 microns, filiform [thread-like], with many oil droplets, finally distinctly 5-8-septate; asci 8-spored, or rarely 4-spored, reaching 118-135 microns long and 9-14 microns wide; paraphyses filiform, slightly enlarged in upper part, "somewhat agglutinated but not forming an epithecium"
